Professor Augustus, as he was know by his students and associates in the community, was one who exemplified the attributes of a teacher, leader, and community organizer during his tenure of life in the Tupelo, George Washington, and Park Hill area. Professor Augustus was a great communicator with the youth of the area. He served many years as the football coach, basketball coach, and baseball coach and the athletic director of all sports activities at George Washington Carver High School. His major interest was to be able to communicate with all the students enrolled at the school. To many of his students, he provided money to allow the children to enjoy a hot meal on campus, realizing many of the children came from extremely poor families. Professor Augustus' athletic background, including a stint as a semi-professional baseball player, provided him many contacts with colleges in Mississippi and he utilized these contacts to assist in acquiring four-year scholarships for graduates of George Washington Carver High. Professor Augustus was also interested in the salvation of his students. He served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent in the Lane Chapel CME Church. He led his teams in prayer before each and every game and he insisted that his players attend church somewhere. This scholarship is for minority students who are graduating from Tupelo High School, with preference given to Park Hill residents. "A Man Who Loved His Community"

CHARLIE NELMS SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENGLISH MAJORS ( not granting at this time)Deadline: 03/18/2013
Charlie Millard Nelms was born February 27, 1947 in Belzoni, Mississippi. He grew up with an older sister and two younger brothers. He attended Tupelo Public Schools from the first grade and graduated in 1965. By the time he was in junior high he had taught himself to play the harmonica, a treasured gift from an uncle. He later acquired a banjo and entertained his classmates. In the Tupelo High School Band, he was one of the French horn players and the band director praised his "golden ear." He was elected Friendliest Boy in his junior year. He entered Mississippi Southern with a small music scholarship. He sang in choirs at Calvary Baptist Church and with a band of classmates called The Monx. Much later he was accepted to sing with the May Festival Chorus and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He had a pleasant lyric tenor voice and loved harmonizing sounds of the human instruments. He, his good wife, Jeannie, and a group of these artists toured Europe one summer, vacationing and marveling at other wonders of the world. Charlie appreciated all the achievements of both the famous and the unsung. He loved simple things as well as magnificent ones. Nice wood or a well-turned phrase or serenely sailing across a lake, all brought him joy. As his vision began to fail, he logged many hours listening to the radio and would discuss national broadcast programs, i.e., Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home companion on Saturday afternoons. He recommended his relatives in Mississippi listen, too. Garrison's reference to "English majors" repeatedly during his shows reminded Charlie of his high school English teachers. He loved their classes and, until his death in 2006, he continued to study and with enthusiasm seek new words and their usage. In his computer was a list of things he really liked: living in America, good craftsmanship, hard-working grateful people, a little astronomy, a little gardening, having the net at home, world religions, and continuing education about all sorts of stuff. There are other things on the list, showing his great sense of humor and laughing at himself. May each of us experience learning without an end and as Garrison encourages us at the conclusion of his show, "do good work." This scholarship is not making grants at this time.

He was recognized as a Student of the Month his senior year and was voted a class favorite. He was inducted into the National Honor Society and chosen for the Rotary Code of Ethics Award. These and other achievements led to Clay being chosen for the 2003-2004 Tupelo High School Hall of Fame. During his freshman year at Ole Miss, Clay was initiated as a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and was actively involved in Campus Crusade for Christ. He served on the Student Alumni Council and was a member of the College Republicans. He was an avid Ole Miss sports fan and loved to take in the whole experience of Saturday football games and going to the Grove, spending the day with his family and friends. Two of Clay's favorite quotes were: "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." (Phi. 4:13) and "Never look down on anyone unless you are helping them up." Both quotes speak volumes about Clay's love for the Lord and his love for his fellow man. In describing himself, he wrote: "Ever since I became a Christian, Christ has been the most important thing to me, and He has helped me through all my struggles and done some awesome things in my life." Clay's life of 19 years touched many people. He was a shining light in his community, his church (First Baptist Church, Tupelo) and his school. Clay lived for Jesus with passion. His zest for life was contagious, and he loved surrounding himself with his friends. The world is definitely a better place because Clay has been here. He is now in Heaven with his best friend, Jesus. This scholarship is for graduating seniors at Tupelo High School.

FUTURE EDUCATORS OF AMERICA (Betty Lou and George Rutledge) SCHOLARSHIP (for Tupelo High School seniors planning to major in education)Deadline: 03/18/2013
On Easter Sunday, April 6, 1953, Betty Lou Haynes was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. She grew up in Fulton and graduated from Itawamba Agricultural High School in 1971 where she was a cheerleader, editor of the yearbook, and very involved in many school and church activities. She was voted Best All Around and received the Citizenship Award at graduation. She continued her education at Itawamba Community College, where she was a cheerleader and editor of the yearbook and a member of the ICC Hall of Fame. She graduated from Mississippi State University in 1975 with a B.S. in Business Education. Since there was no opening in the area for a Business Education teacher, she began her employment with the Mississippi Research and Development Center in Tupelo. Her desire to teach began at her alma mater, IAHS, where she taught for one year. Since there was a dire need for Special Education teachers, she returned to the University of Mississippi and received her M.Ed. in Special Education. She taught at Fulton Grammar School. the ICC Special Vocational Education Department, and Milam Junior High School before joining the staff of Tupelo High School in 1982 as a Learning Strategies teacher for Special Education. At Tupelo High School she also served as the cheerleader sponsor and yearbook editor for several years. She received many awards while teaching including the Teacher of Distinction and the "Extra Mile Award." She felt that one of her greatest accomplishments was organizing the Future Educators of America (FEA) Chapter at THS. She felt that students should be given the opportunity to explore teaching before they went to college. She sponsored the "Shadow a Teacher" and the Inspirational Teacher Luncheon. The goal of FEA is "growing our own teachers" for Tupelo to reap many benefits in the future for the city and school system. On March 10, 1984, she married George C. Rutledge, her devoted husband who supported her in all endeavors. Betty Lou devoted much time and effort in to helping all her students learn and receive a high school diploma. She realized that all do not learn by the same methods or at the same pace. Therefore, she used various modalities to provide information. She spent endless hours in typing notes for her students, taping reviews and tests, giving oral reviews, and making arrangements for her students to have additional time for assignments and tests. She believed teaching" life" lessons were very important. She wanted them to understand that life can be hard, but obstacles can be overcome. In December, 1999, Betty Lou had to face one of life's biggest obstacles when she was diagnosed with Stage IIIB breast cancer which was very aggressive and already in her lymph system. In 2000 after enduring nine months of chemotherapy and 36 radiation treatments her cancer went into remission. In 2001, one year after her last radiation treatment, the cancer moved to her liver. At this time she was given two years at the most. In November 2002, another setback came when the cancer went to her brain where there were 15 tumors. At this time, Betty Lou decided that due to her declining health and her desire for her students to have the best education possible, she would retire from the job she loved after more than 27 years. Twelve radiation treatments followed by Gamma Knife and eventually four brain surgeries led to her being unable to participate in the activities she loved - school and church activities, traveling, reading , and golf. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and some who have only heard about her and her courageous fight and positive attitude. As members of the First United Methodist Church, faith was a very important to Betty Lou and George. The only thing she asked God to do was to give her the strength to face whatever there was to face. She learned the most valuable lesson in life - enjoy life because nobody has promised anybody tomorrow. On December 5, 2006, Betty Lou's long seven year battle with cancer ended. Betty Lou touched so many lives in and out of the classroom with her zest for life and her courageous inner spirit in health and sickness. She was a living testimony of her faith in God and her commitment to the advancement of humankind. This $1,000 scholarship is for a graduating senior at Tupelo High School who is a member of Future Educators of America and will be majoring in education.

Phillip Neal Jones was born July 30, 1949 in New Albany, Mississippi. Phil was one of six children raised in a very poor home. His life was dominated by an alcoholic father and an abused mother, who saw no way out of this home environment. Phil realized early in life that a good education would provide the only way out of this situation. His philosophy was, "It's not where you came from, but where you are going that really matters." You cannot change the past, but you can determine your future. Phil graduated form W.P. Daniel High School in New Albany, Mississippi, in 1967. By acquiring loans, grants, scholarships, and jobs, Phil was able to attend college. In 1971, he graduated from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. Phil began his business career in January of 1972 at Brookwood Furniture Company. He worked his way up the ranks, and in 1986 became a co-owner of the company. He remained a successful owner of the company until severe illness forced him to retire in 2004. Phil realized what a difference an education had made in his life, and knew that many other lives could be changed in the same way. He used every opportunity to encourage young people to get a good education. Remember, "It's not where you came from, but where you are going that matters". This scholarship is available to graduating seniors at Pontotoc City and County schools. Three scholarships are given annually for $10,000 ($2,500 per semester) to Itawamba Community College.

Tyler was born December 4, 1989 in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of Tommy and Kristi Sloan and brother to Bailey and Madeline. Tyler was a 2008 graduate of Saltillo High School. There he was an avid athlete, participating as a member of the baseball, football, and golf teams. Playing golf was his favorite pastime and he spent many hours on the course or the driving range at The Trace. In anything Tyler chose to do, academically or athletically, he always strove for excellence. Tyler had a magnetic personality, such warm compassion for others and a smile that would light up any room. He had an obvious love for his family, his friends, and all who knew him, and this showed in everything he did. He touched many lives, of all ages, in his 20 years on earth and left an inspiring legacy to us all. He had a special magnetism to children, and he was drawn to them as well. Paramount to the love he had for others was the love he had for his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was so deeply proud of his faith and never missed an opportunity to witness to his peers. To know Tyler was to know his love for and devotion to Christ. His favorite scripture verse is found in Psalms 27:1. It reads, "The Lord is my light and my salvation - so why should I be afraid? The Lord protects me from danger - so why should I tremble?" Tyler lived knowing that he could do or face anything with Jesus beside him. Now his new home is in Heaven, and he is smiling that smile he was so famous for, adding to the beauty and splendor that awaits us there. This scholarship is for a graduating senior and athlete at Saltillo High School.
